Why make a mobile garden?

Our primary location was selected to be visible from the beaten path so that curiosity might incite them to detour for a closer look. Sitting on a grassy patch, the garden is equipped with folding desks and log stumps for seating, offering a convenient juxtaposition of nature and school. We hope this arrangement will encourage longer engagements at the garden and possibly facility chance encounters by individuals who unwittingly share an interest in the garden. The ability to use the garden's physical structure as scaffolding for subsequent interaction is key. Fliers and other announcements can hang from posts, allowing satellite members of the garden community to organize in time and space, around other similar interests they happen to share.

The primary need that this project is addressing is community involvement at UCSD.  By creating a space where the community can meet, at while holding responsibilities for the development of that space, we are hoping to create social capital between community members.  Along with creating a social space we are hoping to create an awareness of the gardening community at UCSD that is located behind the Che Cafe.  To do this we are going to make fliers that notify people who to contact if they wish to contribute to that community.

We hypothesize that this mobile garden/community involvment experiment will engage the people of UCSD, and create a social space.  By drawing people in using a central space social connections will be created.
