- A common feature on most college campuses, swings will serve a practical purpose of allowing students and visitors of the campus alike to enjoy the UCSD grounds from a completely different point of view as well as provide stationary areas throughout the campus landscape that invite fun, playfulness and relaxation. The simple function of the swing and its temporary installation would suggest the potential of spaces that have previously been taken for granted allowing them to become re-imagined and serve an additional beneficial purpose.
- Injecting swings into the landscape could potentially reduce the perception of a space for student pedestrian transit, as well as entice people to linger and spend time within the natural environment. Additionally, it provides anyone willing with a lighthearted, playful, and fun pastime between classes or at anytime of the day. Due to its close proximity to the Mandeville shuttle stop, and Library Walk, participants would be in close contact to the general student body that travels en mass throughout center campus daily. The swings placement throughout the Sun God lawn could perhaps funnel student traffic from Library Walk towards the lawn, reactivating the general area for student use. This intervention is a much needed stimulus to the UCSD community.
- Walking to class often is very dreary as all you see is the large conrete buildings closing in from all sides. Also, there is a definite lack fo locations around campus that are specifically designed for students just to let loose and act like a kid for a moment before true adulthood sets in. Information recieved from this intervention will also tell us who is most likely to utilize the swings as well as when and where.
- Another piece of information recieved would be the campus' ability to allow for unofficial interventions put on by students without administrative approval. This was done by putting four swings up in approved locations as well as putting up four swings in non-approved locations. We believe that this will definitely make have a positive impact on campus and we hope that people will be overjoyed to see the installations and unable to hold back their need to play.
