The Club House

Why We Did It

The Concept

The overall goal of the project was to create a physical intervention on the UCSD campus in the hopes that students will use it as a starting point for some form of social interaction that did not exist before.

A possibility that I am interesting in exploring is the content of the art and writing people will leave behind. There will be no instructions on The Club House, only black space and materials. Will the subject matter be different on the outside compared to the inside? Will people limit themselves to using the materials placed on the interior or exterior, or will they incorporate all the available materials regardless or the location of the artistic space? In short, will the dichotomous interior/exterior nature of the House influence people’s expression?

In the long run, it is my goal to present these unused spaces on campus as a viable social space for UCSD Students, so that in the future, permanent fixtures can be installed, like better access or public seating.

The Need

UCSD has one of the geographically largest and most varied of the UC campuses, and yet, students stick to convening along sidewalks and dining areas. Stretches of grass and other usable space is generally ignored, or used only as a shortcut to get from once place to another. The Club House will be implemented in the spirit of inviting the student body to integrate further into the university space that they should rightfully use.

The Hypothesis

My expectation is that people will be initially reluctant to mark on the house, but once a few people do, then more will. My hope is that the form or content of existing art on the house will influence the later contributions as a visible marker of social interaction and collaboration through time. I also suspect that the contents of the interior of the house will be more private than the outside, reflecting social norms of what is appropriate for interiors and exteriors.
