We thought about a variety of swing designs using materials such as metal chains, and metal bar suspensions, and rubber seats, but we came to the conclusion that the simplest design for a swing was the best choice.  Wooden planks and rope were the least costly swing types and their incredible ease of design and construction really empowered us into believing that very little is required to rework the social environment of the campus for the better. Hopefully our project has encouraged and inspired others into creating structures which invite fun and social interaction.

Color was incredibly important in the design of these swings.  It allowed our swings to become visually noticeable and easily identifiable as well as implied an inherent sense of fun in the color choices of the planks which included bright red, crisp sky blue, vibrant green and sharp yellow. Using colored spray paint and primer, we did several coats of paint so that the colors would ‘pop’ in the drab green, grayish, brown color scheme of the natural landscape.  The overall design and color choices for the swings were a determined attempt at creating fun, visually captivating swings that beckoned interaction from the university student while at the same time returning the university student to a period in time much simpler and more carefree, a time when fun and simple pleasures where still de rigeur.
