Student Center Reconstruction Intervention
AKA:
KSDT DJ DAMAGE DISPLAY EXTRAVAGANZA
Description
A week-long party taking place nightly outside of the KSDT office in the Old Student Center, serving as a critique on some of the subversive steps taken by the University's reconstruction of the old student center to discourage peer-to-peer interaction and community. Camcorders connected to two projectors will record and subsequently project live DJ sets: one over the steel door that has been placed in the middle of the old DJ window, and another beneath the "new" DJ window (which is unsuitable for peer-to-peer interaction) as a proposal for modification. Hence, it is simultaneously an invisible shape of something past (a representation of the old DJ window) and a potential future (a representation of a new DJ window). During that week, bustling interactivity of the past is brought back to the present through such projections and attractions.

Site

This is the former KSDT DJ window, which now has a large steel door stuck in the middle (incidentally, the steel door does not even have a handle on it). The window served as a site of interactivity, where persons could communicate with the DJ (requests, etc) via notes on the window, etc...The first projection will be laid over this space, as a memorial to the former DJ window, and as a means of questioning the functionality of the steel door.

This is the "new" KSDT DJ window, which is too high for any interaction to take place. Furthermore, it appears that the pay-phone beneath the window, obstructing a potential expansion of said window, is largely unused, if not out of order. The projection will hence occupy the empty space below this window, as an ephemeral proposal for reconstructing the window space.
Who will be affected and how?
In the past, the large DJ window not only allowed plenty of natural sunlight into the KSDT office, it also allowed plenty of spontaneous song requests, greetings, and other interactions with the public. Now, with the construction of a steel door over the window, the area is less inviting for peer-to-peer interaction, or any interaction for that matter. During the week of our event, bustling interactivity of the past will be brought back to the present through music and through the large projections of DJ activities. This serves as a critique on some of the subversive steps taken by the University's reconstruction of the old student center to discourage peer-to-peer interaction and community.
