Hi, my name is Shawn Yourd.
I am a third year Visual Arts Major, emphasis in Studio. I have been interested in architecture (interior and exterior) since high school and hope to use this coarse to expand my knowledge of the field. Currently I am taking VIS 111 with Teddy Cruz, a coarse that deals with social interaction within large and small spaces. Between 111 and my other sculpture classes (VIS107A, B, and now CN with Haim Steinbeck) I have begun to develop an understanding for social space.
A piece I have just finished deals with personal space in relation to the American society. The 'awkward bench' not only is difficult to sit in, it brings you really close to the person you sit next to in it. It is either more or less comfortable for each group of people depending on how close their relationship it. In general, Americans have a large personal space bubble. If this bench were placed in a public space, I would like to monitor who sat in it, how often two people sat in it together, and what their relation was to one another if they did sit together. That then could spawn a whole new project, or a part of the 'awkward bench' series.

Nice! A really interesting take.
What do you think about embedding pressure sensors into the seats, so that you can measure how many people sit on the bench, and for how long? If you are not familiar with electronics, don't worry, it's easy. :)
