Hi everyone, my name is Sarah McClelland. I'm a senior at Sixth College and I'm taking this course to fulfill my practicum requirement because it seemed like an extremely interesting way to do so. It just so happens that I came up with a great idea and hopefully it will cause somewhat of a stir on our socially awkward campus. Not to mention that it would be just plain awesome to have an ipod bench on campus. I've decided that if I can wire it up to a solar panel on top of the bench, it would take care of the battery situation. There are no pictures or designs yet, but I'm working on it. It needs to be both weatherproof and accessible so I have a lot of technical things to think about but when I finally build it, people will come to see it! My partner is Marjory Loh, who also has some cool ideas of her own about how to change social space. This looks like it will be a great quarter and I'm very excited! Below is my practicum proposal verbatim that explains my project on a slightly deeper level:
SARAH MCCLELLAND: ipod bench team proposal
I chose this course because I want to explore ways that art can make a dynamic social change. I intend to address the issue of unused social space and lack of social interaction therein. My goal is to change the social environment throughout the campus by installing a shared space for people to gather and interact in a musical environment. Instead of people walking around campus with earbuds listening to their own music, this installation will create a forum for people to share their personal music with others (via speakers in the bench). The community of students, faculty and visitors to UCSD will benefit from this project by the opportunity to experience and share music from many different individuals and spanning all genres. More importantly it will encourage people to socialize on a global level through music. I have agreed upon a plan with Derek Lomas in accordance with my team partner Marjory Loh. The end result will be an installation on campus for all to share as well as a research paper discussing how it combines culture, art, and technology to promote socialization in a previously unsocial space.
