The lawn spaces througout campus are empty a huge majority of the time (Urey Hall, Near the Terrace Beneath the Library)--unless your playing ultimate frisbee--they are simply oversights for students as they walk along the predetermined paths throughout campus. They're really only utilized be vendors or when clubs decide to have a booth for promotional purposes. We don't need so many open fields of grass--they blot out rather than create spaces for interaction. If several of these spaces were transformed into natural and social ecologies--planting different types of tree which provide shade, and could possibly be used to susped things from such as tire swings or hammocks--it would be a great area for students at all periods of the day. The addition of moveable seating would be great as well--creating furniture or benches or seating which alludes to games ( premade checkerboard on tables for checkers and chess) or interesting shapes (Like the benches inside the atrium of the new student services building) would only help the student body. What a majority of the campus is missing is the simple idea of FUN. Options filled with potentialities for play WOULD be a wonderful addition to any area of campus--it's important not to forget the basic principles of fun and simple excitement, especially on a college campus. Yes we have volleyball nets, yes we have tennis courts and basketball courts--but I'd prefer less organized forms of play for individual fun and simple cavorting. Install a huge verdant log which people could sit on, balance on, or crawl through--install permanent swings for additional optional fun seating.
Let's make learning and the learning enviornment fun again.
