Hi, everyone,
Although half of a century has passed by in my life, I'm still searching for my tribe. After four years of studying in Visual Art-Studio and Math-Secondary Teaching Education, this spring is my last quarter. As a returning student and a single parent, I'm concerned about the inequality of education in the society. Education has never been fair, and frankly, it will remain unfair. On the other hand, the fact of education’s unfairness is just as harmless as the fact of life’s injustice. We all grow up with ideal ideology, and more or less, we stop challenging but adjusting our personal value and beliefs towards society. Instead of reforming our society, we continue to be directed by it. One of my major works is raising two young adults. Their growing pains constantly lead me at revisiting the conflicts and complexities between values, and beliefs as well.
One of my goals is to express mathematics through animation and comics on the principle of stimulating youths in critical thinking, and to publish them on a free access website for fairness’ sake. In my past teaching field-work experiences, my belief in sharing the beauty of knowledge has not changed. My study of the popular errors that secondary students make when learning math in public schools encourages me to execute this project. And I believe that everyone deserves to experience the excitement of learning, as it is in my mind, the most interesting part of living. I had applied to Teach for America, and I am looking forward to joining this group of people and work in New Orleans. 'Social architectures' seems to be an interesting and beneficial field to study, but there's an obvious irony in the principles of a selective course and the supposed equality in today's educational system.
In my art practices, I started with two dimensional works and am fond of installation and performance. I'm a visual art person and I can't stop making art works, but at this moment, the commitment of teaching for two years in New Orleans is just as right as practicing art. I want to see more kids over there experience the joy of efficient learning just as much as I have to see a work in my mind being executed. After all, teaching in public education system is a political act.
