ANNE CHAN
Hi there.
I’m a third year transfer student studying Visual Arts-Media with a film emphasis. I recently transplanted from Los Angeles County where I grew up splitting time between its suburbs and urban areas. I have three years of TV and Video production experience from my high school Regional Occupational Program. Within that time, I collaborated with peers to create news programs that aired on the local cable channel, operated sound systems for school events, and made documentaries for the school district. My short film that abstractly deals with the subject of suburban sprawl received the Best Beginning Film Award at my college film festival. I have heavy interest and knowledge in music ranging sporadically from psychedelic drone noise to the accessi-disposabities of radio pop. Most recently, I’m entranced by graffiti art, intervention art, and in general, visual analyses. In my Structures of Art course taught by Professor Teddy Cruz this winter, I am continuously inspired to re-examine and affect social boundaries and spaces.
Albeit helpful to the community, fulfilling the CAT practicum through a role such as an online tutor, at least for me, would be copping out. I am led to believe that this course will be challenging and immensely inspiring. The idea of this course appeals to my everyday lamentations of the sterilescapes we inhabit: the parking lot plazas, stucco bulldozer planes, faux-fountain decked malls, etc. The ennui of my hometown structure that expelled my friends and I to explore the abandoned buildings and drains, why we searched for more of those spaces, and how we ran into others doing the same. It appeals to speculations evoked from the likes of Koyaanisqatsi, Our Daily Bread, and over a hundred cameras overhead when one steps into a mass merchandise retailer. Social “Architextures” is a great opportunity for me to explore and intervene said frameworks, specifically in the site of our academic engagements through an alternative, artistic and architectural collaboration. All of that and maybe minus some of the romanticization.

I had a really great talk with Teddy Cruz today. He'd really like to be involved. Thanks for the interventionist art link!
