Where I'm Coming From...
I came to UCSD with the intention of becoming a clinical psychologist with my own practice one day. Since then I have been exposed to so many different aspects of psychology that interest me, that now I really can't decide. For the past two quarters I have been working under Dr. Schreibman in the Autism Lab and it has been a great experience getting to work with kids from this increasing population as a therapist implementing a relatively new treatment. Of all the things I have learned in my psychology classes so far, behavior analysis and modification makes the most sense and hopefully I will be able to incorporate it in my future career, whatever that may be.
What I Want from the Course...
I'd like to explore the idea of design and architecture as it impacts people's emotions. How does room set a mood? What implications does this have on people's behavior? Can this concept be proven? If so it would be interesting to see if we could manipulate this idea to make it functional. I'm thinking of places that generally elicit negative responses, such as the hospital or dentist's office. Would it be possible to change spaces like these to produce a more positive affect? On a smaller scale I am also curious about furniture placement and how it might affect behaviors like sociability and productivity.
